ZINA - Michael Middelkoop
Medialane - KRO/NCRV
This fall the new eight-part drama series Zina will start at KRO-NCRV. The story is about five friends and their insatiable urge to become who they want to be and takes place between the Moroccan culture and Dutch polder reality.
This feel-good series shows a new story which is touching, funny and cheeky and in which everyone can recognize themselves. Zina can be seen from Tuesday, December 7 at 21.20 at KRO-NCRV on NPO 3. The series is directed by Michael Middelkoop and produced by MediaLane.
In Zina we meet Amal (Soumaya Ahouaoui) and her friends Lamya (Asma El Mouden), Sofia (Jouman Fattal), Nisrine (Dunya Khayame) and sister Samira (Sofia Yousfi). Amal is a Moroccan-Dutch woman who has her life on track. She has a job, a house and is about to marry Younes, type of ideal son-in-law. This makes her doubt all the expectations imposed on her by others and by herself. She has checked off almost all the boxes on her list. But is she happy?
In the first episode, Amal's life is turned upside down. Her wedding day doesn't go as expected. Rather; it turns into a big drama, after which everyone in her family and in-laws have an opinion. Especially about Amal. Fortunately, Amal is surrounded by her girlfriends who support and help her, but in their own lives also run into impossible choices. So how much support do the girlfriends still have from each other? Or to their families?
Peter Kuipers, director KRO-NCRV: "Zina is a Dutch drama series about friendship and family ties. About love and sadness, with a smile and a tear. Zina shows a current mix of Moroccan and Dutch culture. Themes such as personal development, gender identity and emancipation are discussed. KRO-NCRV finds it important to create awareness around these themes."
Zina was conceived by creative producer Daria Bukvić and Fadua El Akchaoui, the makers of the successful theater show Milk & Dates and the film Meskina. The scenarios were written by Willem Bosch, Dunya Khayame, Fadua El Akchaoui and Manju Reijmer.
